Got Gym Anxiety? Here Are Some Tips To Fix That

With summer starting, my schedule has calmed down immensely. I’m no longer spending my days flying from one place to the next, and have been spending more time doing things like reading and tanning. With all of this free time, I’ve also started to work out again. I love working out, and starting out my day with some sort of movement always sets me up for a good day.

Recently, I’ve discovered the power of lifting, and I love the way it makes me feel. The only problem is, that I have CRIPPLING gym anxiety.

I feel like the minute I walk into the gym, all eyes are on me. When I’m racking my weights, I feel like people are judging me. When I’m doing a set, I’m terrified that I’m doing it wrong, and someone is going to say something to me.

The more I’ve gone to the gym, the more I realize that that is not true. Everyone is focused on themselves and their own workout, and could care less what I’m doing.

Even with that knowledge, I still always get a little apprehensive about going to the gym. So, I’ve come up with some of my best tips and tricks to combat that apprehension, and I thought I would share them.

First, have a plan: I don’t feel nearly as overwhelmed when I walk into the gym and know what I’m doing. I feel better when I know what exercises I’m doing, what machines I need, where the machines are, and how long my workout is going to take me.

Second, do your research: If you know exactly what workouts you’re doing, you’ll know exactly what muscle you should be hitting and exactly how to use that machine. Nothing is worse than doing an exercise and second-guessing if you’re doing it right, or, doing an exercise and hitting a completely different muscle than you meant to.

Go with a friend: Walking into a gym is 1000% less intimidating if you’re walking in with someone next to you. They kind of act as a security blanket for you, and it’s nice to walk around a big scary gym with a friend.

Dress the part: I’ve noticed if I put on a banging gym fit, I feel more confident, and then feel less intimidated.

Lastly, ask around: If you’re unsure of what you’re doing or if you’re doing something wrong, ask a friend. Ask your local gym rat and I’m sure they would be happy to help you. Remember, the gym is as intimidating as you let it be. You’re there to better yourself, and that’s all that matters.
