7 Effective Ways to Take Care of Aging Skin

Written by: Cora Gold

Aging skin is a natural part of life. The skin gets thinner and becomes less elastic, which makes it vulnerable to bruises and wounds. Wrinkles and age spots also start to appear. Caring for your skin is important at any age. However, as you age, your skin changes and may require extra care. Explore these seven ways to nourish aging skin.

1. Have a Gentle Routine

Protect aging skin by adopting a simple skin care routine. Some people wash their face once at the end of the day, but a morning wash can be a good way to prep for the day. You can use cold or lukewarm water for extra gentleness on the skin. Use these product-specific suggestions in your routine.

  • Cleanser: Certain face washes can be too harsh on the skin or contain exfoliating microbeads. Swap them out for more milky solutions that clean the face without abrasion.

  • Toner: Alcohol-based toners can be harsh on aging skin. Try to find more creamier formulas that hydrate and soothe your face and body.

  • Moisturizer: Moisturizers are essential for boosting skin hydration. Thinner serums and gels can work, but those with dry skin may benefit from more emollient versions like creams and lotions.

2. Try Out Retinol

Wrinkles and pores tend to get large and in charge as you age. Thankfully, retinol can reduce their appearance and help make you look more youthful. However, you need to make sure that you apply this with care, as it can be harsh on the skin.

You want to leave this step toward the end of your skin care routine. To minimize skin irritation, layer on retinol 30 minutes after washing your face. Put it on at night since it increases sun sensitivity.

3. Get a Chemical Peel

Chemical peels can improve the general appearance of your skin. While you can get this procedure done on the face, including the neck and hands is recommended. It’s best to treat signs of aging before they show up to keep skin plump and youthful.

Start with a light peel if it’s your first time. You should also avoid exfoliating and waxing to ensure your skin has enough natural oils to protect itself. Remember to boost moisture with your hydrating skin care products.

4. Have a Good Sunscreen

Sun sensitivity can become more apparent over time as your skin thins. Make sure you put on sunscreen to protect yourself from UVA and UVB rays, whether you’re going on a leisurely walk or running errands.

Remember to generously apply sunscreen on the hands, face and neck. It can fade with sweat, so you want to reapply every so often. Spray or powdered formulas are perfect for quick touchups.

5. Use a Jade Roller

Incorporate a jade roller into your skin care routine to switch things up. It can naturally shape and firm up the skin to combat aging. It also improves blood flow and circulation, which can improve your absorption of moisturizers and other hydrating products.

Remember to wash your face and remove all the dirt before massaging the face and neck with the jade roller. Be gentle as you work it along your jawline, cheekbones and eye areas. Once done, wash it for future use.

6. Eat and Drink Right

Taking care of your aging skin is about more than what you apply to your face— you also have to be careful about what you eat. Make sure you have a well-balanced diet that gives your skin the nutrients it needs to protect itself.

Focus on drinking water, which provides the internal moisture you need to perk up your skin. You can use phone notifications to remind yourself to eat regularly and nutritiously and to get a glass of water.

7. Manage Your Stress

Did you know your stress level can also impact the aging process? Your hormones can tear down collagen and skin elastin in the long run, revealing signs of aging. Minimize worrying and give yourself space to rest.

Practice getting enough sleep. Aside from feeling refreshed, you’re giving your skin breathing room to ditch dullness and dark circles. If you enjoy napping, regulate your routine so it doesn’t impact your beauty sleep at night.

Start Caring for Your Skin

Skin becomes more sensitive as you age, leading to signs of aging like wrinkles or skin thinning. Follow the tips above to care for your skin and reduce these signs. You can maintain a youthful appearance and boost your confidence.
