Busting Adulting Myths with Corinne Foxx & Natalie McMillan from the "Am I Doing This Right?" Podcast

I don't know about you, but I remember growing up and thinking I'll have everything together by the time I'm 25. Because apparently, that age is a good age to know if you're ready to have kids, get married, have your dream career, and pretty much have it all figured out.

Boy, how far off based were we?

Truth, by the time I was 25, I was still working part-time at a gym; I had just finished grad school and was in debt, marriage…ha, kids…wtf? I was more concerned with how I would pay rent or what health insurance I could get. I couldn't have been further away from having it all figured out, which by the way, is the biggest effiing lie anyone can try to sell you because, news flash, you never figure it all out. Even though it's a lie, I wonder where we get these adulting expectations and myths? How the heck do we begin to find answers to all our adulting questions?

Well, recently, Chauncey and I got to sit down with Corinne Foxx and Natalie McMillan, the podcast's hosts, "Am I Doing This Right?" to bust some adulting myths and discuss how their podcast came to be.

Why did you start your podcast?

Corinne: So, we met when we were 14 at summer camp. It was like a camp that my mom told me later was a camp for weird kids. I remember she dropped me off, and I was like, "oh, these are all the weird kids." It was a filmmaking summer camp, and it was kind of a very eclectic crowd. We were the only semi-normal ones, so we gravitated towards each other. We just stayed in touch over all these years. I mean, we never lost touch, and now we have a podcast together.

Natalie: Yeah, we think it's important to just kind of say things out loud like Corinne, especially with mental health, because everybody's usually thinking the same thing, but nobody wants to be the one to be like, I have no idea what I'm doing. And she and I privately would like to call each other and be like, "Okay, so I'm like filing this tax return. I have no idea what this thing is like do you know is this right? And we would naturally figure it out ourselves but like as a.little team. Then one day, Corinne was like, "I think we need to do this as like a project, and the things that we figure out on our own we should share because nobody else knows this, either." I mean, the title of the show is "Am I Doing This Right." We took the approach of like, let's have these conversations, the way we really have them. Let's drink wine. Let's have fun. And so every episode, we rate a bottle of wine and to keep it light and fun.

What are some major adulting myths we can bust?

  • I think number one is that when you're "an adult," which I actually don't know when we become adults, I don't really feel like one, but nobody ever knows what they're doing.

  • "I'm gonna get this figured out." No one ever figures "it" out okay; there's nothing to figure out; its life.

  • Not all friends get to stay forever. As you get older, you start realizing, okay, some people will stay in your life and some people, you know, that was just a season.

What are some of the topics you talk about on your podcast?

Corinne: We talk about anxiety because I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when I was 14. And at the time, there was no conversation about mental health. People weren't talking about anxiety, depression, self-care, and all that stuff, so it was super isolating. So I feel like there's a conversation for Natalie, and I want to prioritize that. We also have episodes about digital currency, the pre-school version of what digital currency is, we also have on a sexpert, which is probably my second favorite episode. And we also talked about things like how to create a morning routine like a billionaire, where we Googled what Oprah and Bill Gates do every morning.
