For the longest time I never thought I could do yoga. I always thought it would be way too slow to ever break a sweat and wondered how anyone could get a workout from it.
Well that's before I actually gave yoga a shot and boy was I surprised. Not only did I find that yoga was everything everyone said it would be, I found out that there were all different types of yoga. Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Bikram, Hot Yoga, honestly I could go on for days but you get the point.
Now I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I'm this yogi genius and spiritual guide, totally not my style. However what I can get behind is what it does for your body, mind and how you feel overall. Because of this I'm more open then I was to yoga and trying different styles and classes from all kinds of studios.
Recently So She Slays Co-Founder, Chauncey, and I went to check out this new yoga studio that opened up on 4th Street in San Francisco called CorePower Yoga. I'm gonna say right off the bat it's one of the nicer yoga studios I've been in and it's not because everything was new. Their studio layout is welcoming and the staff there couldn't be more excited to have you walk through their doors.
I know some yoga goers can be a little intimidated when going to check out new studios and classes. And I'm going to admit I was a little nervous myself trying CorePower Yoga having never done it before and so was Chauncey since she recently had knee surgery. Whether you realize it or not yoga is a very freeing, open, and yet personal workout so being that vulnerable in a new space can make you a little hesitant.
And well that's exactly how I was hesitant and kind of nervous. As I sat on my black CorePower Yoga mat, they kindly let me barrow, I felt the presence of my nerves start to build. However, as soon as the class instructor, Tyler, walked in all that nervous energy seemed to float away. With a big smile and bright eyes he welcomed everyone to class and began to tell us how yoga changed his life and lead him to San Francisco. I have to say he's one of the more open and inspiring instructors I've come across with such a great personality.
The class Chauncey and I took was an intermediate one known as CorePower Yoga 2. I know what you're thinking, so what makes CorePower Yoga different? Well allow me to paint you this picture. In one class you go from traditional yoga poses like downward dog and warrior one and two, to knocking out different ab workouts all while in a room that's between 95 and 98 degrees. That's only one type of class they offer there are others that take your workouts into higher levels of intensity if that's what you're looking for as well.
After class is over and you're laying down in your Shavasana, or what I like to the call "the best part of taking a yoga class," is when CorePower Yoga goes the beloved extra mile. As everyone was zoning out and focusing on letting go my nose picked up this faint smell of eucalyptus being fanned over me. You think this sounds amazing? Oooo, let me tell you this is like the icing on top of the cake. Instantly my body reacted and started to relax even further until I was a big blob of human melted into my yoga mat. It sounds gross but trust me it's freakin amazing!
Now what good is a workout if you don't feel like you did anything afterwards? Honestly my number one reason for not trying yoga back in the day, couldn't have been more wrong. I personally like to save my judgement on the effectiveness of a workout until the day after I take the class. I do this to see how sore I am. If I'm sore that means the workout did it's job and I'm on the road to a toned and healthy body. So as I'm writing this article I'm proud to say my core, legs, and arms are a little sore today which means CorePower Yoga did it's job.
